Progress! As of the last week of July, the roof on the guesthouse is complete meaning the site can now use all 53 of its beds. The pillars to hold up the roof over the church are now also poured, and the rock and sand is ready for the next team! Some great organizational advances have been made as well:
- Schweitzer UMC in Springfield brought a $30,000 check for the Methodist Church of Puerto Rico to purchase a second van for Vieques to help transport people around the island!
- The MCPR hired a new local volunteer coordinator, Tammy Cruz, for Vieques through the help of UMCOR funds. Tammy has spent extensive time in both Vieques and the United States and is the perfect connection point for teams as they serve over the course of the week.
Given the number of teams, local leaders looked for more ways to feed teams over the course of the week. One company, Rincon del Sabor, offered to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner for groups at significantly reduced rates as part of their support for rebuilding Vieques. Teams now have delicious meals delivered right to the work site!
Finally, the phrase "Vieques se levanta/Vieques will rise" is appearing all over the island. We continue to pray and stand with our sisters and brothers in Vieques. "
